History

NUST was established in 1991 by combining military and civilian educational resources. Following the development, the existing military academies were transformed into the core colleges of the National University of Science and Technology. In 1991, the first college affiliated with NUST was MCS. In 1993, the university received a charter, and CEME and MCE became part of the university. In December 1994 and November 1995, CAE and PNEC became part of NUST, respectively. In September 1997, all primary colleges were upgraded and CAE opened MS courses. In 1998, PNEC opened an MS course, and in the same year, AMC opened a bachelor’s degree in dental surgery. In 1999, CEME and CAE obtained ISO 9001 certification, the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) was established in Islamabad, and the NUST Business School (NBS, formerly NIMS) was established. The School of Mechanical and Production Engineering (SMME) offers degrees in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering and is one of the most competitive engineering schools in Pakistan.

As of 2016, NUST enrolled more than 15,000 full-time students, more than 20 departments, and more than 1,280 faculty and staff. It is among the top 50 universities under the age of 50 by QS International Rankings and one of the top 4000 universities in the world by QS. According to 2022 QS International Rankings, it is the first university in Pakistan. QS has placed it in the top 300 in the world of electrical engineering and also in the top 500 in business research and mathematics. In the Times Higher Education Rankings, the University of Technology Singapore has been included in the top 100 universities of BRIC countries and developing economies, 120 universities in Asia and 250 universities in electrical engineering. In 2016, it was named one of the 50 leading youth universities in the world by Times Magazine. NUST is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the United Nations Educational Influence and Television Network.
