Quaid-I-Azam Islamabad Institution is a public research university in Islamabad, Pakistan, that was founded in the year 2000. Islamabad Institution was founded in 1967 with a focus on graduate education research, but by the 1980s, it had evolved into an interdisciplinary university with undergraduate and graduate programs. With more than 13,000 students as of 2015, the institution has grown to become Islamabad’s largest university. The institution is situated in the foothills of the Margalla Mountains on a 1,700-acre (or 6.9-square-kilometer) campus.
History
The Pakistani government created Islamabad University on July 22, 1967. It was renamed Quaid-i-Azam University to honor Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founder, who was born 100 years ago this year. However, the university’s name is still spelled differently, with I instead of “e” for Ezāfe, uniting the two terms in Jinnah’s title Quaid-e-Azam.
Teaching and research initiatives, such as doctorate and master’s degrees, were established from the start of the institution, followed by the master’s program. Undergraduate courses are currently available at the university.
