The Sindh Medical College was renamed Jinnah Sindh Medical University on April 7, 1973, after a committee appointed by the Sindh government approved its establishment. Around 200 students enrolled in the first year of MBBS in 1973. The college’s first principal, Khawaja Moin Ahmed, was appointed. The college began functioning in the pediatric ward of the Jinnah Graduate Medical Center in 1959, which had been a military camp since 1865.

Affiliations

The Higher Education Commission and the University Grants Committee have fully accredited the university (Pakistan). Other medical institutions with which the university has ties include the Jinnah Graduate Medical Center, the National Institute of Child Health, and the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases.

Sindhi Medical College joined Dow University of Health Sciences in 2003. Other DUHS-related institutions, such as DMC (Dow Medical School) and Dow International School of Medicine, share courses, professors, and other resources. In late 2010, it merged with Jinnah Graduate Medical Center.
